How should I sharpen my drawing and coloring pencils so they don’t break?

First, treat them gently. The leads can break inside the pencil if dropped. Art pencils have softer lead than school pencils. Try placing the pencil inside the hand-held pencil sharpener and rotating the sharpener while holding the pencil still. If the pencil shavings come off in small pieces, you might need a new sharpener that is not dull. If your art set has a sanding block, try rubbing the tip of your pencil against the sandpaper, rotating, so the pencil or pastel forms a new point.
